Not Just Food

There are so many details that can make even a weeknight meal feel special.

• Set the table nicely. Is there a tablecloth that’s okay to use? (If not, get a roll of white or craft paper and make one). If your family has a special set of dishes or glasses, ask your adult if you can use them. You’re cooking, and it’s nice to treat it like a special occasion.

• Light candles. No, you’re not at a fancy restaurant, but it’s so easy to do, and candlelight makes every meal feel luxurious. (Remember, of course, to ask your adult.)

• Make a no-tech rule for dinnertime. Some families keep a basket where everyone, including guests, can deposit their phones and devices before sitting down to eat.

• Start a conversation. Try writing questions on slips of paper and keeping them in a jar. At each meal, someone can pull out a slip and everyone can take turns sharing their answers. Open-ended (rather than yes/no) questions are best for this: If you could change one thing about the world, what would it be? If you could have dinner with any person, living or dead, who would you choose and why?
